ABOUT COUNSELING

Counseling

Every person has a unique story. My hope is to provide a place where you feel heard, understood, and encouraged as we work together toward greater healing, growth, and hope.

Karen McCain

A Little About Me

I moved to Gainesville in 2005 to complete my B.A. in History at the University of Florida and have spent nearly my entire adult life here. Over the years, this community has become home, providing friendships, encouragement, and support beyond anything I could have imagined.

My husband, Carter, and I were married in 2006 and are raising three teenage sons. One of our sons has autism with high support needs and related medical challenges. Parenting our boys has given me a deep appreciation for both the extraordinary joys and the unique challenges experienced by families raising children with developmental differences and complex medical needs while also caring for the needs of the entire family.

My Counseling Philosophy

My counseling philosophy has been shaped by professional training, countless hours of research and study, my own deeply healing counseling journey, and the experiences that have shaped my life.

As someone who also lives with ADHD and autism, I understand what it feels like to search for understanding, wrestle with questions about yourself, and discover that growth often happens through safe, healthy relationships.

I believe counseling is about far more than reducing symptoms. It is about understanding your story, recognizing your strengths, processing difficult experiences, building healthier relationships, and moving toward the person God created you to be.

Whether you’re navigating anxiety, parenting challenges, neurodiversity, chronic illness, grief, relationship concerns, or simply feeling stuck, my hope is that you’ll find counseling to be a place where you feel genuinely heard, respected, and encouraged.

Who I Work With

  • Adults and teens
  • Parents of children with developmental, behavioral, or health challenges
  • Individuals navigating ADHD or autism
  • Anxiety, stress, grief, and life transitions
  • Relationship and family concerns
  • Clients who would like faith thoughtfully integrated into counseling, as desired

Outside the Counseling Office

Outside of counseling, I co-lead Deborah’s Daughters, a women’s discipleship group, and am actively involved in my church.

I enjoy spending one-on-one time with friends, being outdoors, swimming, hiking, and camping. I’m re-energized through creative outlets like drawing and drumming, as well as spending time with my dog, listening to the Wild at Heart podcast, riding Florida’s tallest and fastest roller coasters, and doing puzzles and brain teasers of all kinds.
